Hotel Ring, Gandawa, Belgia

The hotel building is located right next to the Ghelamco Arena (KAA Gent football stadium), close to the huge hospital and the student campus in the developing Artevelde district. Smooth, uniform in material and color, the glass façade comes to life due to the shape of the building. A very interesting form of a “snail”, on a rounded polygonal plan, with a circular courtyard, with a variable height of both the roof and overhang over the ground floor, and with a sharp, diagonal undercut of the gable wall at the lowest point. The design and execution are complicated due to the low repeatability of the aluminum structure and glazing elements. A very important aspect of acoustic parameters (vertical transmission of sounds, unacceptable in the hotel) inspired the development of a special solution for column expansion joints on each floor.
